Why the … ?    by Dori Killion

I highly value Truth, hunger for transparency, want know why bad things happen. I could very possibly have a Thing for Investigative Journalists.

I will never know everything I want to know. Couldn’t handle it anyway. But why do bad things happen? It shouldn’t be so hard to figure some things out. Like why do rape kits go unprocessed? Who’s running this show?

I yearn for separation of church and state, of money and campaigns, of science and politics. As Naomi once said, “Don’t call me Pleasant, call me Bitter”. Book of Ruth

We knew why Don got cancer. During his tour in Vietnam, Don was exposed to Agent Orange, that very efficient defoliant created by Monsanto. Why my cancer, we wondered: Inherited? Exposure to toxins? Stress induced?

In hindsight, it turns out we had a lot of marriage to fit into 9 short years: sickness, health and procreation. I began to consider the burden of “why not”. I’d been offered the gift of resilience and I was being tested.

God please grant me both a curious mind to continue my search and peace of mind to accept the mysteries of life.

  1. Love “why not me?” Rain falls on the just and the unjust, I recalled after reading your essay. No one is “too good” to be hit by tragedy.
