Merry Christmas! Re-live the joy, pain, and complexity of the Sacred Everyday series that we explored this summer. Here’s a link to a free eBook, a pdf file that contains every reflection written by John E, Katie N, Bryan C, Sara R, Charlie J, Dori K, and Pastor Bo. Available for a limited time at https://vermonthillsumc.org/media/free-ebook/.
Thank You! Thank you for participating in the Hayhurst gift giving project. The parents were so appreciative, and the children were VERY excited. A big thank you to Mary and Susan for helping with delivery.
Devotional Books Brian McLaren’s book, “We Make the Road by Walking,” the basis for our winter and spring sermon series, will be available in the entryway for $16 (check or cash only.)
ZooLights This Saturday, December 22, we’ll meet at the Oregon Zoo at 7:00 pm for this frosty, furry event! Prices range from $13-18 (2 and under are free); discount of $5 with proof of Trimet transit; zoo members are free. Questions? Contact Elizabeth Brown at familyVHUMC@gmail.com.
Candlelight Service Please join us this Sunday, December 23, at 6:00 pm for our traditional candlelight service. This will be a beautiful, contemplative time as we draw our hearts closer to God and reflect on the miracle of Jesus’ birth.
Open House Melanie Wilson and Patrick Sousa are hosting a Christmas Open House on Tuesday, December 25, 2:00pm-5:00pm. Snacks, puzzles and games, slideshows, music, and good company are to be found at 2433 SW Idaho St, Portland. No need to bring anything, but if you want to share your Aunt Tillie’s famous Christmas cookies or have extra chocolate laying around, they won’t argue with you bringing it! Contact them at 503.293.2233 or email@example.com. A note on parking: They live on a dead end and parking is limited. Four cars will fit in their driveway if you will pull in as far as possible and park to one side or the other. There are also a few spaces along the fence across the street and three at the end of the street. If there is no space, consider parking in the next block of Idaho Street (on the other side of Capital). If you are taking the bus, the closest TriMet stops are VERY close, stops 942 and 943.
2019 Calendars Receiving multiple 2019 promotional calendars in the mail? Bring them to the church office. They will be given to low income services for re-distribution. They are really appreciated.
Fifth Sunday Game Night The perfect antidote for cabin fever! Let’s gather and play some fun card and board games. Sunday, December 30, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Bring a snack to share if you like.
All Church Work Party Saturday, January 5, 10:00 am. We will be putting away the Advent décor and tidying up the Trinity Memorial garden. Plenty for everyone to do!
Flowers We’re looking for volunteers to bring seven flower arrangements on Sunday, January 6. There’s a sign-up sheet on the Welcome Table. If you have a heart to redistribute them after the service, please contact the office.
Time of Remembrance We will gather in the sanctuary after coffee time on January 6 to share our memories of Anne Begg and the joy she brought to VHUMC.
Reconciling United Methodists Gathering On Saturday, January 12, you have an opportunity to learn more about the Special General Conference to be held in February. The agenda also includes a performance of “Drag Queen Story Time at Hillsboro FUMC,” a potluck lunch, and a time of prayer and blessing for the delegates to the conference. The event will be from 9:45 am to 2:00 pm at Oregon City UMC. For more information contact Rev. Bonnie Parr Philipson at firstname.lastname@example.org or (503) 547-3822.
Spotlight On… Volunteers! Here’s a big shout-out to all of you who give so generously of your time, talents, experience, and energy to keep Vermont Hills UMC running. Practically everyone has some role to play — from the Sunday morning ushers, liturgists, and coffee hosts; to the devoted dozen that show up every month at the All Church Work Party; to the numerous folks who serve on various committees, making decisions and caring for the life and health of the church and the congregation. Half of you have hung on, through thick and thin, because this is “your church.” The other half have been welcomed recently into VHUMC and jumped in with both feet. The church needs all of you. And we are so very grateful for all of you. Merry Christmas and Happy 2019!
No Sunday School in December Due to all the extra Sunday activities this month, we will take a short break from Sunday School.
ImBible Study Imbibe (verb): 1. absorb or assimilate (ideas or knowledge) 2. drink alcohol. Join us in the Fireside Room on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm for the first part, and afterwards for the second part at the drinkery. Everyone is welcome as we open our minds and hearts to a new way of looking at scripture.
Talk N Thought The “dynamite” ladies of TnT will not meet on Tuesday, December 25 or January 1. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
