A church that doesn’t have it all figured out is truly refreshing – and a bit surprising.
Many of us grew up with a brand of christianity that claimed to have it all figured out and sometimes the answers appeared to be written in stone.
Our theme for July was ‘change’ and one of the most difficult changes to adjust to is an approach to christian spirituality that is adaptable and evolves with you as you mature and grow.
We are not a perfect church.
We are not a finished people.
We are not a complete program.
We are imperfect, unfinished, and incomplete.
This is part of the reason that we are transitioning to be a conversational community. We don’t have it all figured out yet. We need lots of input and want to hear different perspectives. Conversation is an unscripted and emergent activity that both acknowledges and accounts for change and difference.
We won’t always agree. We won’t always be comforted by what we hear. We won’t always come up with the ‘right’ answer. This is all a part of the journey of faith as we live out our stories together.
Vermont Hills UMC is not a stage show or a performance. It is neither rehearsed nor is it perfectly presented. It is sometimes messy and sometimes challenging – this is the nature of being an unfinished church.
